Once an industrial hub, Chinatown North/Callowhill is a neighborhood in flux. Three key public realm projects—all scheduled to break ground by 2015—have the potential to transform its landscape: Center City District and Friends of the Rail Park's conversion of the abandoned Reading Viaduct rail line into an elevated park, with Phase 1 spanning from Callowhill to Broad and Noble streets; Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation's construction of the Eastern Tower, a 23-story mixed-use complex and community center on the 1000 block of Vine Street; and Asian Arts Initiative's transformation of the underutilized Pearl Street alleyway into a vibrant cultural space that connects and celebrates the neighborhood's diversity. See and hear about these project designs from those cultivating their visions, experience how they connect with other Philadelphia neighborhood visions in Asian Arts Initiative's fall Neighborhood Workshop exhibition, and get a preview of DesignPhiladelphia 2015's Kick-Off Party site.
